Common Questions About the UV Sterilizer

Do I need pre-filtration for a UV system to work?

Yes — UV systems require clear water to work effectively, since cloudy or sediment-laden water can shield microorganisms from the UV light. A sediment pre-filter is required for well water applications and recommended anywhere turbidity is a concern.

How is UV different from chlorine disinfection?

Chlorine disinfects chemically and leaves a residual in the water, but can create disinfection byproducts and is less effective against some pathogens like Cryptosporidium. UV disinfects physically by damaging microorganisms' DNA, without adding anything to the water — but it provides no residual protection downstream of the unit, so it works best as part of a layered system.

How often does the lamp need to be replaced?

The UV lamp should be replaced annually (roughly every 9,000 hours of operation). The lamp may still glow after that point, but its germicidal output drops below effective levels even though it looks like it's working — which is why we recommend replacing it on schedule.
